Each year the South Oldham chapter of Y-Club participates in two mock-government conferences: KYA and KUNA. With KYA having come and gone, KUNA is fast approaching, and the members of Y-Club are hard at work on preparations for their various programs. Unlike KYA, which focuses on Kentucky legislature, KUNA allows students from across the state to participate in debate concerning global affairs. Each school at the conference will represent certain countries, and lobby for United Nations support on various issues. This year, SOHS will be representing Canada, Greece, and Iran as well as Security Council positions for Ecuador and Venuzuela. There are many specialized programs within the KUNA conference that allow every student to find their niche. Whether it’s documenting the conference as a Media Corps member, presenting a resolution, or frantically responding to a natural disaster on the Security Council, everyone who attends KUNA has an important role. Students who attend the conference gain valuable leadership skills, public speaking experience, and exposure to a variety of people from all over Kentucky.
This year, the South Oldham Y-Club is more involved than ever, with multiple students serving as Presiding or Supporting Officers, and several candidates in the running. Azitta Akrami (12) is serving as the Secretary General this year, which is the highest Presiding Officer position available. “KUNA has allowed me to explore my passion of international relations while getting to debate and learn about different cultures,” Akrami explains. “Being Secretary General comes with a lot of responsibilities. The ability to be a team leader while also a team player is really important. I think KUNA is a life-changing experience, and it’s a great way to open up and discover not just the world around you, but yourself as well!” The SOHS candidate for Presiding Officer this year is Carlyn Ketcherside (11). “Y-Club has become a big part of my life,” says Ketcherside, “I’m so excited to run for PO this year because I’ll get to invest more of my time into a program I love.” With the conference only weeks away, the Y-Club is busier than ever! Taking place March 6-8, the conference is an envigorating start to the final stretch of the school year!
