Lent is the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter, representing Jesus’ 40 days in the desert. Many Christian denominations participate in Lent, including Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Methodists, Anglicans, and Lutherans. On Fridays during Lent, these groups abstain from eating meat and typically engage in some type of fasting. Many also use the time for penance and spiritual cleansing. Lent has also become more secular in that more nonreligious folks participate. Many use it to catch up on New Year’s resolutions or eliminate bad habits.
One of the most social aspects of Lent are the numerous Fish Fries in Catholic communities. In many cases, they are social events often run by and located on parish campuses. Fish fries are on Fridays with a meat-free menu with staples like hush puppies and mac and cheese. The following are the top of the top and are a must-visit if you are interested.
